  1. CHIANG KAI-SHEK: A political and 
  2. military leader who helped overthrow 
  3. the CH'ING DYNASTY in 1911. Chiang 
  4. Kai-shek (1887-1975) joined forces with 
  5. SUN YAT-SEN in 1918 and eventually 
  6. took over as head of the Chinese 
  7. Nationalist government in 1928. After 
  8. expelling the communists and narrowly 
  9. holding on to power during World War 
  10. II, he was expelled from the mainland 
  11. in 1949 after a civil war between his 
  12. Nationalists and the communists 
  13. Fleeing to Taiwan, he became head of 
  14. the exiled Nationalist government. He 
  15. was succeeded by his son in 1972. (See
